Scott Thompson
President
Scott Thompson is President of PayPal with overall responsibility for growing the global leader in online payments. Succeeding Rajiv Dutta in 2008, Scott previously served as PayPal's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer where he oversaw information technology, product development, and architecture for PayPal.
Prior to PayPal, Scott worked for Inovant, a subsidiary of Visa formed to oversee global technology for the organization. As Executive Vice President of Technology Solutions at Inovant, he was responsible for all development, support and maintenance of Visa's global payment system.
Scott was also Chief Information Officer of Barclays Global Investors, where he implemented a new strategic technology platform and global infrastructure. In addition, he has worked with Coopers and Lybrand, delivering information technology solutions to leading financial services clients such as Wells Fargo.
Scott received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Computer Science from Stonehill College.
Dickson Chu
Vice President of Global Product and Experience
Dickson Chu is vice president of global product and experience for PayPal Inc. In this role, he leads product strategy, development and user experience design for the millions of PayPal consumers and merchant customers around the world.
Chu has more than 23 years experience in the financial services industry. Before joining PayPal, he was general manager for Yahoo! PayDirect, where he transformed the domestic peer-to-peer payments business into an international money transfer service in partnership with MoneyGram. Prior to Yahoo!, he was senior vice president of business innovation at innoVentry, a consumer financial services network of self-service kiosks that delivered check cashing, money transfer, money order and ATM functionality. Chu has held various senior management roles at companies such as I-Impact, Wells Fargo, and CSC Index, where he ran the Hong Kong office.
Chu received a Bachelor of Arts degree in classics and a minor in computer science at St. Mary's College of California.
Ryan D. Downs
Senior Vice President, Worldwide Operations
Ryan D. Downs has served as Vice President of Operations since September 2002. Mr. Downs joined PayPal in December 2001 and most recently served as Senior Vice President of Operations. From June 2000 to December 2001, Mr. Downs served as Chief Executive Officer for eTopia Technologies, Inc., an Omaha-based IT consulting firm. Before that, Mr. Downs was a partner at the law firm of Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott in Denver, Colorado, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation.
Mr. Downs earned a B.S. in Agricultural Sciences in 1991 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1994.
Salvatore J. Giambanco
Vice President of Human Resources and Administration
Salvatore Giambanco has served as the Vice President of Human Resources and Administration since July 2000. Mr. Giambanco joined PayPal in January of 2000 and previously served as the Director of Human Resources. Prior to joining PayPal, Mr. Giambanco worked for KPMG where he served as the National Recruiting Manager for the Information, Communications, High Tech, and Entertainment Consulting practices, in addition to directing KPMG Consulting's Collegiate and MBA recruiting programs. Previously, he was the Director of Human Resources at TechOne, Inc. and was at Ernst and Young and ESS Technology, Inc.
Mr. Giambanco received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Columbia University in New York City, an M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University in the Bronx, and an M.Div. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
Mary M. Hentges
Chief Financial Officer
Mary M. Hentges has served as chief financial officer of PayPal since joining the company in February 2003. As CFO, she is responsible for all aspects of PayPal's finance function including controllership, financial planning and analysis, enterprise risk management, billing, tax, and treasury.
Prior to joining PayPal, Hentges served as the global infrastructure and customer operations controller for Agilent Technologies. There she established a new 100-person corporate finance team to support the newly-created public company. She worked in various executive capacities at Hewlett-Packard, where she led the financial portion of the company's 1999 spinoff and initial public offering of Agilent Technologies. She also spent 13 years in the audit practices of Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse.
Hentges earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Arizona State University and became a Certified Public Accountant in Arizona.
Barry Herstein
General Manager of North America and Chief Marketing Officer
Barry Herstein is the General Manager North America & Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for PayPal Inc., where he is responsible both for PayPal's North America business unit and for PayPal's global brand and marketing strategy. PayPal is the safer, easier way to pay and be paid online, with more than 164 million accounts in 190 markets around the world.
Before joining PayPal, Herstein was the CMO for American Express International's consumer business. In that role, he led development and implementation of integrated consumer marketing strategies designed to grow American Express consumer payments business outside of the U.S.
Prior to joining American Express, Herstein was the CMO at the Financial Times (FT) Group, where he oversaw marketing initiatives for all FT businesses: publishing, Internet and business information. Previous to the FT, Herstein was managing director of consumer marketing for Citibank's international consumer business. He began his career at Avon Products Inc., where he achieved the level of group vice president of marketing for the U.S. business.
Herstein received a Bachelor's degree in finance and marketing from Boston University School of Management and a Masters in Business Administration from the London Business School. He is a member of the London Business School International Alumni Board and a director emeritus of the Jose Limon Dance Foundation.
Philipp Justus
Senior Vice President, Global Markets
As senior vice president of Global Markets, Philipp Justus leads PayPal's business in markets around the world. Together with his teams in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America, Justus is responsible for growing PayPal's business globally by offering the best payments solutions to merchants and consumers.
Prior to joining PayPal, Justus was senior vice president for eBay's U.S. Core Business, where he had overall responsibility for the onsite user experience at eBay.com. He also served as senior vice president and general manager of eBay Europe and was responsible for the strategic direction and successful expansion of all eBay marketplaces across the continent. Justus joined eBay in 2000 as managing director and head of eBay Germany. Under his leadership, eBay became the most successful online marketplace in Germany and the largest eBay marketplace outside the United States.
Prior to joining eBay, Justus worked for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Munich. At BCG, his main focus was on strategy development for fast-moving consumer goods companies.
Justus received his Masters of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and graduated from the Koblenz School of Corporate Management (WHU) with a Diplomkaufmann degree in Business Economics. Justus was a scholar of the German National Academic Foundation. The Forum of Young Global Leaders, an affiliate of the World Economic Forum, named Justus a young global leader in 2006.
John D. Muller
Vice President of Legal, General Counsel
John Muller has served as Vice President of Legal and General Counsel since October 2000. Prior to joining PayPal, Mr. Muller was a partner at the law firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, specializing in finance and regulatory compliance. Previously, Mr. Muller practiced law at Shawmut National Corporation, a multi-state bank holding company, and at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Mr. Muller serves as the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Joint Subcommittee on Electronic Financial Services and served as the chair of the California Bar Association Financial Institutions Committee.
Mr. Muller received a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Jack Stephenson
Senior Vice President of Strategy and New Ventures
Jack Stephenson is the senior vice president of strategy and new ventures for PayPal, Inc. In this role, he is responsible for defining the strategic direction of the company, which serves more than 141 million accounts in 190 markets around the world.
Before joining PayPal, Stephenson was a director with McKinsey & Company, where he created and led the company's North American payments practice. His group was responsible for guiding banks, processors and credit card companies on strategy, technology and operational issues. He also led several research projects on payments and e-commerce topics. Stephenson's work has been published in the The McKinsey Quarterly and Harvard Business Review.
Stephenson received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Yale University.
